Drug Name:Tranexamic Acid
Drug Class:Antifibrinolytic agent
Mechanism of Action:
  • Inhibits the activation of plasminogen to plasmin, which prevents the breakdown of fibrin clots
  • Competitively inhibits the binding of plasminogen to fibrin, thereby reducing the formation of plasmin
Use:
  • Prevention and treatment of excessive bleeding due to surgery, trauma, or menstrual disorders
  • Treatment of hereditary angioedema
  • Off-label use in the management of epistaxis, hemoptysis, and hematuria
Side Effects:
  • Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
  • Headache and dizziness
  • Hypotension and tachycardia
  • Seizures and visual disturbances
  • Thromboembolic events (rare)
Contraindications:
  • Hypersensitivity to tranexamic acid
  • Active thromboembolic disease
  • History of seizures
  • Renal impairment
